Ginger Lily

You smell ginger lilies before you reach them — something like gardenia, with a honeyed sweetness. At the end of every summer there is a big vase of them in our house.

The buds open a few at a time, so one stem keeps flowering for days. We cut stems with only one or two flowers open and plenty of buds still to come, so they last longer at home.

  • Bunch: 5 stems, about 90 cm long
  • Season: roughly February to April
  • Vase life: about 5–7 days
  • Good for: tall floor vases, restaurants and reception desks, any room you want to smell lovely

Tip: pinch off the spent flowers and the buds behind them open better.

Once they arrive

A little care buys you another week

Every stem is cut the day it leaves us. Two minutes of care when they arrive makes them last much longer in the vase.

  1. 01

    Cut on an angle

Trim 2–3 cm off the bottom at an angle so the stem drinks more. Woody stems can also be split about 2 cm up the middle.

  2. 02

    Strip leaves below the water

Leaves sitting in water rot quickly. Pull off everything below the waterline and the water stays clean for days.

  3. 03

    Fresh water every 2–3 days

When you change the water, snip a little more off the stems — a fresh cut drinks better.

  4. 04

    Keep them cool

Keep them out of direct sun, away from heaters and the fruit bowl — ripening fruit gives off ethylene, which ages flowers faster.
