Bayberry picking
Before You Visit
Welcome to bayberry picking at Pude Natural Farm. To help you enjoy your visit and keep our trees healthy, please take two minutes to read the following.
About the farm
When we took over this bayberry orchard in June 2025, the trees hadn't been cared for in years. In our first year we put most of our effort into pruning, clearing fallen leaves and building up the soil, so the farm's roads and facilities are still simple: there are toilets and hand-washing, and the roads are levelled dirt tracks that can be dusty on dry days. We'll keep improving it year by year – thank you for your understanding.
About our bayberries
Our main variety is the Heitan bayberry – deep purple-black when fully ripe, about 2–3 cm across, sweet with a gentle tartness and very juicy. We also grow Xiaotian and Dongkui bayberries; the three types ripen one after another over a season of about a month. To learn how to tell when they're ripe and how to pick them, see How to Pick Bayberries.
Safety first: please don't climb
Bayberry branches are brittle and snap easily. Please don't climb the trees or pull down high branches; visitors who climb do so at their own risk. Parents, please let children know before you arrive.
Booking and entry
- Picking must be booked online in advance. You'll receive a confirmation email (please check your spam folder if it doesn't arrive)
- On arrival, show your confirmation email at reception – on your phone is fine, no need to print
- Please arrive in your booked session; each session is 2 hours
- Cancel more than 48 hours before your visit for a full refund or one free reschedule. Cancellations within 48 hours aren't refunded, but you can pass your booking to family or friends. If we close because of weather or not enough ripe fruit, you'll get a full refund or a free reschedule
In the orchard
- There are two tickets: All-you-can-eat (adults $60, children 4–13 $30) lets you eat as much as you like in the orchard; Entry ($19.90) lets you taste a few. 3 and under are free. With either ticket, bayberries taken home are charged by weight
- Please take your rubbish with you or use the bins provided
- We keep beehives in the orchard – please keep your distance
- Wild blackberries with thorny canes grow among the grass and flowers – watch your step
- Please keep off planted areas; young plants need protecting too
- We don't provide food at the farm
What to wear
- Closed flat shoes (sneakers are best) and long pants – the ground is uneven and there are insects in the grass
- A hat, sunscreen and insect repellent; summer sun is strong, so bring water
- Dark clothes are a good idea – bayberry juice stains
Weather
In extreme heat, heavy rain or other severe weather we may change or cancel sessions for safety, and we'll let you know by email. Paths can be slippery after rain, so please walk carefully.
