The Story of Building a Road on the Farm
They say that when you want to achieve something, there will always be many tests and obstacles, and only when you overcome these difficulties will you have a true sense of accomplishment.
In June 2025, we officially began managing the farm. The first "hero's slope" of the farm became a problem for us. The slope was very steep and a bit bumpy. Going down was fine, but only a hero could climb back up!
Our main concern was whether a two-wheel drive vehicle would scrape the chassis and whether it would be muddy on rainy days. So we invited friends to test it, and sure enough, the bumps would scrape the chassis. So we started to fix the road. Initially, we hired a road construction team who had already leveled the foundation. Sam, a Westerner who delivered road stones, saw our road and sincerely said: "You found road construction workers who are very diligent and did a good job, but they might not understand road construction on Australian farms very well. It should be done this way..." George and our farm manager Aysen listened (Aysen has road construction experience) and felt that what he said made sense. Coincidentally, Sam also works in road construction, so we hired him to build the road.
Sam worked very diligently and gave us many suggestions. The road leading into the farm that everyone sees now was rebuilt by Sam, removing many unnecessary abandoned sheds and some dividing plants. Just as we were systematically preparing to discuss the concrete road with Sam, Sam went missing! At first, we thought he might be unwell, and we were worried that he got sick from getting wet while working for us in the rain. Later, his worker Norm, an old gentleman, suddenly knocked on our door. He said that because he didn't have our phone number, he was worried that we would be concerned about their project, so he specifically came to explain the situation. Afterward, Sam's father also came to our farm to communicate further with us. We were touched by their sincerity and responsibility, and we also expressed our understanding of the force majeure situation they were facing and that we would wait for them to resolve the issues before continuing construction.
Therefore, when everyone comes for picking in the future, the farm road will still be a dirt road. Although it is no longer bumpy, it is not yet very aesthetically pleasing. While it won't scratch your car, it might be dusty.
We took over this farm in June 2025, and we dedicated most of our energy to managing the bayberries. Winter pruning, clearing thick fallen leaves from the ground, and so on, are all parts of the journey we've taken. Therefore, the farm environment is not yet very beautiful, because we have too little time to manage it. However, all of these are in our hearts. After this year's bayberry season ends, we will intensively plan the entire farm, hoping that in the future, whether it's the farm, bayberries, or other products, we will continue to improve.
